We have a unique way of covering literature and literary expression; while essays may be the norm elsewhere, at Einstein, students can also express themselves through poetry, podcasts, music, videos, and even text-based digital games!

. A critical part of our English instruction model is providing inviting opportunities for verbal, written, and artistic interaction and expression, both independently and collaboratively.

Lower School English

The Einstein School English Department strives to provide its lower school students with a foundation of the critical elements for literary analysis and the key traits of successful writing. Our English teachers guide students through hands-on exploration of the various genres that they will encounter throughout their English studies and help students transition from Elementary-level comprehension to higher-level critical thinking. Our mission is to prepare students for advanced English classes by empowering them with ample opportunities for verbal, written, and creative expression and analysis.

This course provides a balanced instruction in reading and writing. Students will tie phonics, spelling, and language skills to connected texts in reading and writing. This integrated language arts course connects all aspects of word study, vocabulary, reading comprehension, grammar, spelling, and writing in a meaningful context. The instruction allows students to accelerate in the language arts. Students will engage in academic conversations, writing, and reading to facilitate critical thinking and adapt to the ever-evolving nature of language and literacy.

This course combines the study of English and reading. Students develop, strengthen, and broaden their literacy and communication skills. Students will learn and practice reading comprehension through the study of theme, genre, literary texts, sensory language, and informational texts. Using the writing process, students will compose literary texts (poetry and imaginative stories), expository texts, and persuasive texts. Students will engage in a reading and writing workshop experience that include the study of oral and written conventions, research, and teamwork.

This course is a reading and writing experience that relies on the study of well-crafted essays, stories, and poems to direct student writing in literacy, expository, and persuasive texts. Students will study theme, genre, and sensory language through contemporary and traditional literary and informational texts and will use reading and writing as they engage in teacher-directed and self-selected reading and writing experiences. Language study in this course emphasizes grammar, spelling, sentence development, punctuation, and capitalization. Students produce an organized presentation with a specific point of view, participate in discussions, and work productively with others.

This course is a bridge class between LS English 3 and HS English I. Student will continue to learn and practice reading comprehension, interpretation, and analysis processes through the study of literary and informational texts. With an emphasis on collaborative discussions to discover and develop understandings about texts, students will become acquainted with major literary genres. Students keep records of their reading responses and experiences and use these as the foundation for analytical writings. Using the writing process, students will compose literary texts (poetry and imaginative stories), expository texts, and persuasive texts. Language study in this course emphasizes grammar, spelling, sentence development, punctuation, and capitalization.

This course examines English grammar at the word and phrase level. Students develop a deeper understanding of grammar rules and parts of speech. It reinforces how the words and parts of a sentence relate to each other and how the parts of the sentence fit together. Students begin diagramming simple two-word sentences and complete the year by mastering complex sentences with multiple phrases and clauses. In addition, student in the course read one novel each quarter and complete several novel student activities.

High School English

The Einstein School English Department is committed to fostering curiosity and allowing students to discover, question, share, and explore in a safe and respectful environment. Throughout all higher level English classes, teachers focus on enabling students to analyze literature and practice their critical thinking skills as well as refining their writing skills in anticipation of college-level English courses.

This course emphasizes the development of skill sin composition and reading. Students take their writing through all the steps of the writing process on a regular basis. In addition to planning and drafting, student revise for organization and the idea development and edit their papers for clarity and the correct use of the conventions and mechanics of written english. Students will read from multiple genres and analyze the works of various authors to gain knowledge of the writers' artistic models, and then apply real life experiences to their creative writing.

This course is a survey of world literature, with special emphasis on the medieval period.  Students will study works of prose, poetry, drama, and fiction in relation to their historical and cultural contexts and examine how these influence shape identity and perspective. Students read and analyze works from various authors, with emphasis on analysis of how stylistic choices and rhetorical elements shape tone in the texts. Students deconstruct writing prompts and write a synthesis essay that incorporates perspectives from multiple sources. Using multiple learning and instructional strategies, student acquire not only the knowledge they need but also the confidence in their own abilities to learn and to communicate effectively in real-world situations.

This course provides an overview of American literature from the Colonial Period to the Contemporary Period, allowing students to examine samples of traditional, classic, and multi-ethnic sections that represent this country's cultural diversity. Selections include poetry, drama, fiction, literary nonfiction, and informational texts. As students read, they focus on comprehension, analysis, evaluation, and to propose solutions to social issues. As they write for varied audiences and purposes, students work to develop their ideas and apply effective voice, word choice, fluency, logical organization of material, and appropriate conventions of language.

This course continues an emphasis on fundamental reading strategies and composition techniques aligned with college learning outcomes. Students read in various genres of British Literature from its Anglo-Saxon origins through the Post-Modern periods of the twentieth Century. Students will broaden their understanding and their interpretive skills by thinking deeply about themes and ideas from multiple perspectives. In conjunction with the study of literature is the refinement of composition skills, usage skills, and research skills. Students continue to practice all forms of writing including expository, persuasive, literary, and procedural/work related texts.
